Island Innovation
Fab Island
Reimagining Bali as a distributed manufacturing island — where every community has the tools to make what it needs.
The Vision
What if an entire island could become a distributed manufacturing zone? Not a free trade zone for corporations — but a network of community-owned fabrication spaces where Balinese people can design and produce what they need, locally, using global knowledge and local materials.
That's Fab Island.
The Programme
Fab Island is a long-term initiative to establish a network of Fab Labs, micro-factories, and maker spaces across Bali's regencies — from Denpasar to Singaraja, from Ubud to Nusa Penida.
Phase 1: Anchor Labs
Establish three fully equipped Fab Labs as regional anchors — Jimbaran (south), Ubud (central), and Singaraja (north). Each lab trains local operators and serves the surrounding communities.
Phase 2: Community Nodes
Deploy lightweight maker spaces in schools, community centres, and craft cooperatives — equipped with entry-level digital tools (vinyl cutters, small laser cutters, Arduino kits) and connected to the anchor labs for training and support.
Phase 3: Local Supply Chains
Connect Fab Island nodes into local material supply chains — sourcing bamboo, coconut shell, recycled plastics, and agricultural waste as feedstocks for community manufacturing.
Phase 4: Island-Wide Network
By 2030, a fully connected network where any Balinese maker can access tools, training, materials, and markets — and where the island produces more of what it consumes, locally.
Why Bali?
Bali is uniquely positioned for this experiment:
- Strong craft traditions and skilled artisan communities
- Tourism economy creating demand for locally made goods
- Island geography creating natural boundaries for circular economy experiments
- Active youth population eager for alternative economic paths
- Global visibility to attract international partners and investment
